How to Avoid Spending $100k (or more) on a Credential You Do Not Really Need

It is that time of year when people are applying or getting ready to apply for grad school or MBAs. A few people have asked me whether they should do an MBA. And in a typical MBA student way, I respond "Well it depends....." ;)

The article below from Josh Kaufman is a good piece of food for thought on this subject.

Summary:
- Some programmes are more about getting credentials than an education. The real decision to make is how much is this credential worth to you? Some things to consider...

1. Don’t enroll in a credentialing program if you’re still figuring out what you want to do with your life.
2. Don’t seek a credential in a field where skills and experience matter more than the certification.
3. Don’t seek a credential when the up-front cost is more than a year’s starting salary in the field.
4. Don’t seek expensive credentials in fields where jobs may not exist.
5. Borrow as little as possible, then mercilessly negotiate your debts.
